I use that double sided tape. The only 2 or 3 things I would do differently is to press the tape at each stage of application because it makes it STICK down in place. And as another comment said a ladder stitch which I am also still practising. The results when the tape is well stuck down are better and where you stitch can be more accurately invisible to the naked eyes. I would hold the quilt direction or stitch direction opposite to the way I'm viewing your video. If the direction feels unnatural it probably will be more awkward to see exactly where you intend to place your needle. Im still a baby in the quilting world but a sewing person since i was 8. You never stop learning.
I can't blame you feeling a bit nervous before cutting. Along with all your great tips I've also learnt from you to have lots of patience and confidence. Well done and thanks for sharing 😊
Hi Tracy! Your clown quilt is darling! Your grandchild will treasure it! I always learn something new from your videos! I really look forward to them! Thanks Tracy! Have a blessed weekend!
Ok, so I wasn't feeling the clowns, but those diamonds won me over!! & then the gauze, oh yeah!! & then batman corners & hand stitched binding, just WOW!!! You make everything seem possible, & that baby (& your daughter) will see & feel how much you love them!!
Tracy, you’re adorable. Love the quilt. Batman! All my years, never seen that. Can’t wait for school to start and show this to my students! (That’s saying something - school just got out for summer!). Yes, I teach sewing and quilting (what I call “Fabric Magic”) at the High School. Thank you!
I think I’m in love with Batman ears! I prefer hand binding mostly because I like the look & I don’t do machine binding very well. What a blessed keepsake you’ve made!
This turned out so amazingly adorable Tracy!! You should be proud of yourself…. There is alot of hand stitching in that quilt! Kudos! Definitely a labor of love! I would love to see her face when she opens it. You may even get tears lol
I love the “bat ear”method!! New to me! When I hand sew my binding, I take an extra reinforcing stitch in the quilt top every few inches for strength. Always pull your thread taut by pulling straight ahead parallel with the binding BEFORE doing the reinforcement stitch. It’s probably not critical to the process but I feel it strengthens everything!! Love that gorgeous quilt!! And thoroughly enjoy your tutorials!!
I absolutely get the checking 10 times - then cutting! lol The big stitch quilting is adorable. And I love the backing fabric. Also, I love to see a baby quilt that isn't in "neutral beige/grey" colors but in fun colorful fabrics. Little one will love this!
genius way to a perfect corner, I like the self binding on certain things but really struggle with the corners. THANK YOU!!! Lucky little girl, the quilt is awesome
Good Job! I really like how you show us so much about we can go wrong and how not go wrong! Fussing about the backing so you didn't cut it, shows how careful we need to be. Thanks for the tips.
You are such a sweet person! Your quilt is darling and even though I dislike hand sewing, I do it on all my bindings because I think it looks so much better than by machine. It may take me forever! but I do get it done. Love the batman technique!
OMG I just love watching you I'm so glad I found you! Love this clown quilt and love how you did the Batman binding!! Thank you so much and I'm subscribing right now can't wait to see more! 💜💜💜💜
I learned so much SO MUCH! from this video. Thanks Tracy. I thought I knew how to hand stitch binding....I didn't. I was curious about the fold over binding...who knew...batman, really?
My yardstick might be 1” wide. You’ve got me curious. My current project I plan to do a self binding so this is a very helpful tutorial Tracy thanks bunches!
I LOVE Batman! I love the mitered corners! What a great tutorial!!! I've done what you feared on TWO quilts, and it was such a pain to correct my boo boos. Thanks for the tips. Your quilt is beautiful and your grandbaby is going to love it!
Okay, what you used is basic ladder stitch. Which came out wonder. Good job. I only hand bind my fancy quilts. Utilitarian quilts are bound by machine. Saves time. ❤
Looks like a very handy method for binding quilts. Thank you for sharing! BTW, that's the stitch I use to close up the open seam where I stuff pillows and cushions. I always referred to it as a ladder stitch.
Let's rethink this cutting another way. Grab yourself a piece of tailor or pencil chalk. Place the back, batting and top face up and laying flat on the cutting board. With the chalk mark the line where you want to cut on the top of the quilt. Turn the quilt to the back, ford the back as show in the video. Using a cold iron fold and iron the back. With the sewing machine use a basting the back to the back. Use 1/4, 1/2 from the edge of the back. Use a thread that is visible so you can see it on the front and back sides of the quilt. Once you have the basting stitch in place, Proceed to cut the top. Here the basting stitch thread will be used as a visual to let you know exactly where back is. and where you can cut and stay away from the back using the basting stitch as a visual with no guessing. Love your show. Blessings.
With a little practice, you'll come up through the fabric and the binding in one motion. Your interpretation of a vintage clown quilt is amazing. Jenny Doan has a good tutorial on hand binding. I've encouraged you in the past on the gauze binding. I need to try it. ❤
Never hand sewn the binding, but I will😮 give it a go on the one I am trying to finish. (When I have finished the list from my daughter lol) thank you once again for teaching the way you do, always clear, fun, and helps build confidence in whatever we are making. 😊
You have totally inspired me to try and binding again. The first time I tried it was an epic disaster and I gave up. I am getting ready fro make a baby quilt and I think I’m going to give this a try, again. 🙂
There are loads of tutorials on hand sewing binding down. When you take your stitches from the quilt to the binding make sure your stitches are straight. If they are on the diagonal more thread will show. I use a blind hem stitch and find it very relaxing. I’m hopeless at machine sewing both sides of the binding and struggle with wrangling the weight of the quilt so I’ve always hand sewn the second side down. Sometimes I machine sew to the back and fold over to the front. It’s great if I have points I think I might lose on the front as then I can fudge it a bit. I’ve done a similar thing with cutting the binding but I open the strip up completely. I’ve never seen it done your way but I’ll definitely give it a try. The 🎪 quilt is fabulous and the double gauze backing will be beautifully soft.
I'm so happy that you watched a video on hand sewing the binding. I was wincing in the beginning and gently whispering OH, please watch a video! I love hand sewing.
Might try this on my denim quilt I’m doing I’m not using batting just going to back with a polyester soft touch blanket so should be able to self bind thanks again Tracey😊
I made my first double gauze backed quilt recently and used fleece for the binding. So easy, no finished edge needed, and machine sewing disappeared in the fluff. Also added another texture for baby to explore😊 I was hesitant to use gauze since it is so flimsy.
Love the batman ears! But think I would have put a regular binding on over that gauze. That looks tedious... Turned out beautifully, though. Love the quilting choices.
Better to be overly cautious than to ruin your project. We'll done, Tracy! But really, what's the worst that can happen if you DO cut the backing? You must then bind with the traditional binding. Quilt still done, and not in the least ruined!
To prevent fabric from being grabbed by the machine when you start a seam, try sewing thru a piece of scrap fabric (called a "leader") first then sew right on to the seam. No more picking fabric out of your sewing machine.
I completely understand the technique. Works great. Im thinking the gauze should've been cut like 1.5 inches so there's a bit more to work with. Lovely quilt.
As for the corners. You can create miter corners. The way to do this is take the corner and fold the corner into the quilt at a 45 degree to the tip of the quilt. Then from there you can fold the edges in.
I usually begin at a corner, Wonder clipping the "previous" side for a couple inches, just to be sure my corner is truly square. Then I use a few more wonder clips about 4 in apart and hold the area I'm about to tack down. I do NOT clip all edges at once cause I'd be sure to knock off & lose some of the clips. This is MY way but do what works for YOU.
Hand stitching the binding. Start as you did going into the inside of the binding. Then go into the quilt. grab a bit and come back up. Go back into the binding a small fraction away from the first stitch. Pull the tread so that the quilt and binding are meeting tightly together. . To travel the the thread. Make a choice to the left or to the right whichever way is most comfortable to travel. Go back into the quilt near the same tacked place and travel under the quilt what ever length you want your stitches. 1/8 inch is good more or less. Then come up fro the quilt and grab a bit of the binding.. From here you have one of two choices. To travel the thread under the quilt or to travel the thread in the binding. Make a choice. and keep it consistent through out the binding process. 1 Travel from the quilt. Go in close the out stitch. travel under the quilt. Come up and grab some binding. Go back down near the stitch you came out of. 2 Travel through the binding. Come out of the binding. Grab a small stitch in the quilt. Go back into the binding close to the stitch you came out of. Then travel through the binding. A helpful tip is to use a sharpie on the needle to give you a visual on the length of stitch you want. Blessings
Where do you purchase your gauze backing and what is the thread count of the gauze? I can only find the very loose woven kind. Is that why you doubled it? Love your vids, always learn something!
I purchase the double gauze at Joann's. But Hobby Lobby has it too online. It's called "Bubble Gauze" at Joann's. I doubled it on the back of this quilt...that is why I called it "quadruple gauze" in the video✅
It’s best to look at it from the quilt top side so you have seam allowance guides to look at✅ if you cut from back side then you would be cutting blind.

I've done exactly what you feared....ugggg..I now use scissors to cut the batting making sure it runs along the top of the backing...much safer...love this diamond quilt so much that I've made two and it's become one of my favorites ♥️

The Sewing Channel, You're so talented! I had to hit the like button!
🎊🤩🥳🎉
I was with you on the clown theme, but you did an amazing job. Your daughter and grand baby will love it. I love the diamond look in the center.
Beautiful quilt and I love your teaching style. Thank you Vx
AWSOME AWSOME JOB‼️ I would be so scared to do that.😬♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏😉🐾
tracy. That is pretty awesome. Thanks for showing this.
Great job❤❤❤ The quilt is beautiful!

The Harlequin Diamonds are just perfect! Adorable quilt for the new baby. ❤️ Thank you for your self binding tutorial!
That is a very special quilt, I can understand why you were nervous. Beautiful quilt!!!❤
Adorable quilt

What a darling quilt you’ve made ❤
This is the first time I have seen the 'batman' ear technique. Awesome!!! I'll be doing this
You are doing it exactly right ! have no fears girl you got this enuf talking already lol thank you so much for your tutorials!!!❤🎉😂
Love the clown quilt! Great job😊
Ladder stitch is the way to go. You then have the tiniest vertical stitch which is virtually invisible. Beautiful quilt.
I really love this binding so I am watching very closely to be sure I can do it. Thanks for sharing this amazing quilt.
genius way to a perfect corner, I like the self binding on certain things but really struggle with the corners. THANK YOU!!! Lucky little girl, the quilt is awesome

Love your quilt. ❤ your granddaughter will to whens shes old enough to understand you made her first quilt with love .
OMG I just love watching you I'm so glad I found you! Love this clown quilt and love how you did the Batman binding!! Thank you so much and I'm subscribing right now can't wait to see more! 💜💜💜💜
I love the Yellow gauze I always surge before I fold over my gauze. It keeps it from fraying. It is beautiful what a wonderful heirloom.
Love listening when you learn and make mistakes so that we don’t have to repeat!
I learned so much SO MUCH! from this video. Thanks Tracy. I thought I knew how to hand stitch binding....I didn't. I was curious about the fold over binding...who knew...batman, really?
Bless your granddaughter’s journey home❤️💐🙏
My yardstick might be 1” wide. You’ve got me curious. My current project I plan to do a self binding so this is a very helpful tutorial Tracy thanks bunches!
Tracy, you did a fantastic job. Your braver than i am. But i might try it. Beautiful!!🎉❤
I love your clown quilt ❤ Regarding stitching the binding down, I learned years ago from Jenny at Missouri Star.

Looks great! I'm OCD also! It must run in the family!😂❤
lol😂 it must!!!!!
Hi Tracy
I always hand bind my quilts I use epp thread which is fine and you do small running stitch right on edge
Love the quilt
Thanks for demonstrating how to blind stitch! Most of the videos on binding just say to finish with a blind stitch.
I'm so happy that you watched a video on hand sewing the binding. I was wincing in the beginning and gently whispering OH, please watch a video! I love hand sewing.
lol 😂 right!!!
You did great.
My first thought, use scissors? I'm a rookie so I might be missing something. Beautiful quilt!!!
Might try this on my denim quilt I’m doing I’m not using batting just going to back with a polyester soft touch blanket so should be able to self bind thanks again Tracey😊

Just LOVE this quilt!!!! Fabulous teacher. I am wondering why you didn’t just machine stitch the binding down.
I see you have changed your rotary. Maybe you could do a show about the available tools you use.
To prevent fabric from being grabbed by the machine when you start a seam, try sewing thru a piece of scrap fabric (called a "leader") first then sew right on to the seam. No more picking fabric out of your sewing machine.

Yes. I think you are right ….1.5” would have been better for the gauze✅
As for the corners. You can create miter corners. The way to do this is take the corner and fold the corner into the quilt at a 45 degree to the tip of the quilt. Then from there you can fold the edges in.
This is awesome love it
That is a ladder stitch - this is what I use whenever I had stitch a binding. Match your thread to the binding - perfect and invisible!
Thank you! I wasn’t sure of the name✅
Why did you switch to that new iron? I thought you’d love that cordless. You are a very good instructor/teacher! Thank you so much
I still love the cordless. But the Laura star presses so much flatter 🤷🏻♀️
It's adorable but that would take me years doing all that hand stitching.
I am guessing hand stitching the binding would be like hemming a garmet
Do you have a video on using a minky type blanket as a backing tutorial? quadruple gauze? Tell us about it please!
I started gluing the back after I fold it back. Just a couple dots. Lol when I don't I end up cutting it.

I love this quilt, Tracy. Is this new baby a sister, a cousin for Josie?
The new baby will be her cousin❤️
What is the fabric you used on the back of your quilt. I love your quilts. 🙂

Question: why not cut from the back side? That quilt looks amazing!😊
It’s best to look at it from the quilt top side so you have seam allowance guides to look at✅ if you cut from back side then you would be cutting blind.
I use a single thread for hand binding
Tracy, my belief would be to machine stitch your binding when using gauges. They are too wishy-washy. Just a thought.❤
I always cut batting with scissors and use single thread and ladder stitch and don’t see the thread at all.
I have really bad OCD. It takes me forever to make a cut. Then, there is the actual sewing portion. I have been known to re-do a block over and over.
Me too Paula...I totally understand.❤️
Which Laura Star model do you have?
I have the lift in black✅
Julie or Julia. 😊😊😊
✅
I have made the mistake of cutting the backing instead of folding it under, bummer back to regular binding.
A change of plan, but not ruined.
Why don't you just form with the quilt face down. Then turn it over then you know if it is far enough over.
It’s best to look at it from the quilt top side so you have seam allowance guides to look at✅ if you cut from back side then you would be cutting blind.
Too hard for me as a newbi
You are doing it exactly right ! have no fears girl you got this enuf talking already lol
I've done exactly what you feared....ugggg..I now use scissors to cut the batting making sure it runs along the top of the backing...much safer...love this diamond quilt so much that I've made two and it's become one of my favorites ♥️
